What Types of Coverage Are Typically Included in Commercial Trucking Insurance Policies?

Commercial trucking insurance is a highly customizable and specialized type of insurance that provides coverage for businesses that use trucks and other commercial vehicles for business purposes. Whether you own a single truck or manage a large fleet, having the right insurance coverage is essential to protect your business from financial loss in an accident, theft, or other unforeseen events.  Man driving semi-truck

Commercial Auto Liability Insurance
Liability insurance is the most common type of coverage in commercial trucking insurance policies. It is designed to protect your business from financial loss if you or one of your drivers is found to be at fault in an accident resulting in property damage, bodily injury or death.

Georgia requires liability coverage for all commercial vehicles. In addition, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires semi-trucks to have public liability insurance coverage to help cover large claims for accident-related third-party injuries and property damage or death.

Physical Damage Coverage
Physical damage coverage may be included with a commercial auto insurance policy and typically consists of the following:

Collision coverage may help cover the cost of repairs or replacement if your truck or trailer is damaged in a collision.

Comprehensive coverage may help cover the cost of repairs or replacement if your truck or trailer is damaged by a covered event other than a collision, such as fire, theft, vandalism or weather-related damage.

Motor Truck Cargo Insurance
Cargo insurance may help provide financial protection for the freight you transport if it is lost or damaged while in transit. Cargo insurance may cover a range of goods, including the following:

  • Perishable goods, such as food or pharmaceuticals
  • High-value goods, such as electronics or jewelry
  • Hazardous materials, such as chemicals or explosives

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is required in Georgia. It aims to protect your business if you or one of your drivers is involved in an accident caused by another driver who does not have liability insurance or does not have enough insurance to cover the damages. This type of coverage can help pay for medical expenses, lost wages and other damages that result from the accident.

Bobtail Insurance
Bobtail insurance may help provide financial protection when the truck is not hauling a trailer, whether or not it’s under dispatch. Bobtail insurance typically helps provide bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage.

Medical Payments (MedPay)
MedPay coverage may help pay accident-related medical and funeral bills for the truck driver and passengers, regardless of who is at fault. MedPay can help pay health insurance deductibles and copays after an accident.
